Materials: Dichroic glass (flat and slumped) on stainless steel cable

Inspired by the brief yet stirring moment of Sakura Fubuki, when springtime cherry blossoms fall like snow and fresh leaves begin to emerge, Moment of Tranquility features 2,000 handcrafted dichroic glass elements in two shifting color palettes that reflect the soft pink of cherry blossom petals and the fresh greens of leaves.

Flat pieces beneath the skylight reveal distinct outlines and deep colors that, in direct sunlight, cast vibrant reflections and colored shadows. In contrast, the slumped glass petals along the curved wall widen and expand, offering an iridescent glow in ambient light. Together, these elements create a dynamic, evolving experience shaped by changing light, weather, and the movement of viewers.

“This work reflects my Japanese background and my close, hands-on approach to art creation. It also acknowledges the presence of the Japan House on campus, a place that fosters reflection and appreciation for Japanese culture. Moment of Tranquility is a suspended moment, something gentle and still, yet always in motion. It invites viewers to pause and reflect.”
